A look back: CEMS Startup Challenge

The Student Board and CEMS Entrepreneurs organized the annual CEMS Startup Challenge at the Career Forum in Budapest on the 2nd and 3rd of November 2017. The Startup Challenge was initiated last year to give entrepreneurial CEMS students and alumni the chance to connect with one another, mentors, and Corporate Partners. This year, ten teams competed in two stages and received one-on-one mentoring to help develop their ideas and startups.

A tree grows in Korea: Saving the world one tree at a time

According to the World Wildlife Fund, 17% of the world’s forests have been lost in the last 50 years due to deforestation. In the first year of the CEMS Forest project, “over 90,000 tons of CO2 emissions from forest clearing and burning prevented during the first 18 months of the project, equal to taking 25,000 cars off the road.” We spoke with Student Board Representative, Robert Grey, to learn more about his work in Korea to reverse the effects of deforestation.

The CEMS Alumni of the Year is a joint campaign by the CAA in close collaboration with the CEMS Student Board, which gives the CEMS community the opportunity to learn about CEMS alumni on a monthly basis and vote for the favorite candidate as the CEMS Alumni of the Year. WU Wins Exclusive Course of the Year Award

CEMS students voted for their choice of the exclusive CEMS Course of the Year as the Multinational Financial Management taught at WU. The increasing globalization and integration of goods markets, as well as financial markets, has substantially increased the importance of foreign real operations and foreign financial operations of multinational firms. Understanding the international dimension of financial management is relevant for key tasks in multinational firms such as risk management, financing the firm and determining the cost of capital as well as capital budgeting. CEMS sat down with Professor Christian Wagner who is teaching the course at WU to learn more.

The course is structured in two parts. In the first part, I teach students the basics of international financial markets, in particular currency markets, and financial instruments.

ABB and the University of Cologne win Business Project of the Year

Similar to the rise of the internet the Digitalization will transform our every day lives. Most tasks which can be based on algorithms will be done or at least semi-automated by artificial intelligence and robots. CEMS students studying at the University of Cologne in Germany had the unique opportunity to collaborate with ABB on a business project involving marketing intelligence around IBM’s Watson. The project was voted on by CEMS students as the 2017 CEMS Business Project of the Year. We caught up with Oliver Lawrenz, Group Vice President Marketing & Sales – Performance Management, ABB; supervising professor at UoC Dr. Michael Becker-Peth; and students Daniel Zimpel, UoC; Felix Hütter, UoC; Yiran Yang, USYD; Peizhe Yang, UB to learn more.

“ABB is transforming the way its customers interact through a couple of digitalization programs including FACE (Future ABB Customer Experience) and ABB Ability,” says Lawrenz.
